What Speeds Up Evaporation?
Have you ever noticed how a puddle disappears faster on a hot, breezy day than on a cool, still one? That’s evaporation at work—and it doesn’t happen at the same pace every time. In fact, four key factors influence how quickly a liquid turns into vapor.
Temperature is perhaps the most obvious. The higher the temperature, the faster molecules move, increasing their chances of escaping into the air. That’s why water evaporates much more quickly under the summer sun than on a chilly morning.Next comes surface area. The larger the exposed surface of the liquid, the more molecules are in position to escape. That’s why a shallow pan of water dries faster than the same amount of water in a narrow glass.
Wind also plays a big role. Moving air carries away water vapor near the surface, reducing the chance that escaping molecules will fall back into the liquid. A steady breeze essentially "sweeps away" the moisture, keeping evaporation going strong.Finally, humidity—the amount of water vapor already in the air—makes a noticeable difference. In dry conditions, evaporation happens fast because the air can absorb more moisture. But on humid days, the air is already saturated, slowing the process down.
