What hairstyles are not allowed in the Army?

When serving in the military, personal grooming is about much more than just looks. The military enforces strict standards regarding what hairstyles are allowed, primarily focusing on functionality, safety, and uniformity. While the rules have evolved over the years to become more inclusive of various hair textures, the core principles remain the same.

First and foremost, any hairstyle that distorts the fit of prescribed headgear is strictly prohibited. Whether it is a beret, a combat helmet, or a service cap, your hair must allow the headgear to sit properly and securely on your head. Additionally, hairstyles cannot interfere with the proper use of protective equipment. In critical situations, gear like gas masks or ballistic helmets must form a perfect seal or fit exactly as intended without being obstructed by bulk hair, braids, or buns.

Safety is another major factor. Any hairstyle that creates a health or safety hazard—such as hair blocking your vision or getting caught in machinery—is not allowed. In general, extreme, eccentric, or faddish styles, as well as unnatural hair colors, are barred to maintain a professional and cohesive appearance across the ranks.
