What Happens If Acetic Acid Touches Your Skin?
Acetic acid is best known as the main component of vinegar, but in diluted form, it's harmless and even edible. However, in concentrated amounts—especially in industrial or laboratory settings—it becomes a different story. When strong acetic acid comes into direct contact with the skin, the consequences can be serious.
It can cause immediate pain, redness, and in more severe cases, chemical burns and ulcers. The acid breaks down proteins in the skin on contact, leading to tissue damage. The longer the exposure, the deeper the injury can go. If not treated promptly, these burns may lead to scarring or infection.
Eye contact is even more dangerous. Even a brief splash can trigger intense pain, involuntary eyelid twitching, excessive tearing, and inflammation. The cornea may be damaged, leading to blurred vision or even permanent loss of sight if not addressed quickly. Sensitivity to light is also common after exposure, making recovery uncomfortable and prolonged.
Immediate action is crucial. If skin contact occurs, flush the area with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and remove any contaminated clothing. For eye exposure, rinse continuously with clean water and seek emergency medical help without delay. Always wear protective gloves, goggles, and appropriate clothing when handling concentrated acetic acid.
While household vinegar poses little risk due to its low concentration (typically 5%), industrial-grade acetic acid—often over 80%—demands serious caution. Respect for this chemical, even though it comes from a familiar source, can prevent painful and potentially long-term injuries. Safety isn't just about knowing the risks—it's about acting on them.
