What Happens If an Enlarged Prostate Is Left Untreated?
As men age, it’s not uncommon for the prostate gland to grow larger—a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). While the exact reasons behind this growth aren’t fully understood, researchers believe hormonal shifts and changes in cell behavior over time may play a key role.
Ignoring the symptoms of an enlarged prostate can lead to more serious health complications. At first, BPH might only cause minor inconveniences—like needing to urinate more often, especially at night, or having a weak urinary stream. But over time, if left unchecked, the pressure from a blocked bladder outlet can start to take its toll.
The bladder muscle may thicken and become overactive, leading to urgency and frequent trips to the bathroom. Eventually, the bladder can weaken, making it harder to empty completely. This retained urine increases the risk of urinary tract infections and can even cause bladder stones.
In more severe cases, the backup of urine can affect the kidneys. When urine flows back into the kidneys due to chronic obstruction, it can lead to kidney damage or, in rare instances, kidney failure. While BPH itself isn’t linked to cancer, the symptoms can mimic more serious conditions, so proper diagnosis is essential.
The good news is that BPH is highly manageable. Treatments range from lifestyle changes and medications to minimally invasive procedures, depending on the severity. Early intervention not only improves quality of life but also helps prevent long-term damage to the urinary system.
So if you're noticing changes in your urinary habits, don’t brush them off as just part of aging. Talking to a doctor early can make a significant difference in preventing complications down the line.
