What Happens If You Ignore a Bladder Stone?

Leaving a bladder stone untreated might seem harmless at first, but over time, it can lead to serious complications. These hard mineral deposits form in the bladder when urine is not fully emptied β€” a common issue for people with urinary retention or an enlarged prostate. If ignored, the stone doesn’t just disappear; it can grow, irritate the bladder lining, and cause persistent discomfort.

One of the most common consequences is ongoing urinary pain or frequent urination. You may feel the constant urge to go, only to pass small amounts β€” or none at all. Worse yet, the stone can become lodged in the neck of the bladder or the urethra, blocking the flow of urine entirely. This blockage is not only excruciating but can also lead to acute urinary retention, a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Another serious risk is infection. Stagnant urine trapped behind a stone creates a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the likelihood of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Left unchecked, these infections can spread to the kidneys, potentially causing permanent damage or sepsis in severe cases. Chronic irritation from the stone may also lead to inflammation, bleeding, or even changes in bladder function over time.

While small stones sometimes pass on their own, larger ones typically require medical intervention β€” whether through non-invasive procedures like lithotripsy or, in some cases, minor surgery. The key is early diagnosis. If you're experiencing discomfort, urgency, or difficulty urinating, don’t dismiss it. Addressing bladder stones early can spare you from more serious health problems down the line.
