What Happens If You Leave BV Untreated?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is more common than many realize, yet it’s often misunderstood. While it doesn’t always cause noticeable symptoms, leaving it untreated can have real consequences. Most of the time, BV itself isn’t dangerous and may even resolve on its own. But ignoring it can quietly increase your risk for more serious issues.

One of the biggest concerns is the increased vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted by BV, the protective environment weakens. This makes it easier for pathogens to take hold, raising the risk of contracting HIV, herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea if exposed.

Another potential complication, though less common, is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). If BV-related bacteria travel upward into the reproductive organs, they can infect the uterus or fallopian tubes. PID can lead to chronic pelvic pain, fertility problems, or even ectopic pregnancy if not addressed. While not everyone with untreated BV will develop PID, the risk is real—and entirely avoidable with proper care.

It’s also worth noting that untreated BV can sometimes return, creating a frustrating cycle. And during pregnancy, it’s linked to a higher chance of preterm delivery, making treatment even more important for expectant mothers.

The good news? BV is usually easy to treat with antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare provider. Many people hesitate to seek help, either due to embarrassment or because symptoms seem mild. But speaking up early is key. Listening to your body and getting checked doesn’t make you overly cautious—it makes you smart. In a world where sexual and reproductive health still carry stigma, taking simple steps like this is quietly revolutionary.
