Daily Cinnamon: Benefits and Risks
Adding cinnamon to your daily routine can offer some impressive perks, but it is a habit that requires a bit of balance. Many people incorporate this warm spice into their morning oats, coffee, or smoothies specifically for blood sugar support and its powerful antioxidant properties, which help fight inflammation and protect your cells from damage.
However, medical experts like Dr. Nicholas Church caution that more is definitely not always better. The type of cinnamon most commonly found on grocery store shelves—known as Cassia cinnamon—contains a naturally occurring compound called coumarin. Consuming large amounts of Cassia cinnamon on a daily basis can lead to liver irritation and other potential health complications over time.
If you enjoy having cinnamon every day, a great strategy is to keep your portions moderate—typically around half a teaspoon to a teaspoon at most—or consider swapping out standard Cassia for Ceylon cinnamon (often called "true" cinnamon). Ceylon variety contains significantly lower levels of coumarin, making it a much safer option for daily, long-term use without putting your liver at risk.
