What Happens When You’re Tasered?
Being tasered is not something the body takes lightly. When a conductive energy device (CED), like a Taser, is fired, it sends a powerful electrical current through the body. This current doesn’t burn or electrocute in the traditional sense—instead, it hijacks the body’s own nervous system.
The jolt you feel is your nerves firing uncontrollably. The electrical pulses from the Taser cause motor nerves beneath the skin to activate all at once, forcing nearby muscles to contract violently and repeatedly. Imagine every muscle in your limbs suddenly clenching on their own—without warning, without control. That’s what happens in an instant.
This neuromuscular incapacitation is the whole point. The rapid contractions override the brain’s ability to send voluntary signals to the muscles. You can’t run, lift an arm, or even maintain balance. For a few critical seconds, your body simply isn’t yours anymore.
Most people describe the sensation as intensely painful—like every muscle is being yanked at once—but the effects are usually short-lived. Once the Taser cycle ends (typically within five seconds), the current stops, and the body regains control—though often with lingering disorientation, weakness, or soreness.
While designed to be non-lethal, Tasers aren’t without risk. In rare cases, falls due to sudden collapse can lead to injury, and underlying health conditions can complicate outcomes. Still, for law enforcement, the Taser remains a tool of last resort meant to stop threats without resorting to deadly force.
The truth is, no one walks away from being tasered unshaken. It’s less about the electricity and more about the utter loss of control—your body seized not by injury, but by science.
