What Happens If Acetic Acid Touches Your Skin?

Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar, but while household vinegar is diluted and generally harmless, concentrated acetic acid is a different story. When strong forms of this chemical come into contact with the skin, the consequences can be serious.

Direct contact with concentrated acetic acid can cause immediate pain, chemical burns, and even skin ulcers. Unlike a simple cut or scrape, chemical burns continue to damage tissue as long as the substance remains on the skin. The acid breaks down proteins and disrupts cell structure, leading to redness, blistering, and in severe cases, deep tissue injury.

The risks go beyond the skin. If acetic acid splashes into the eyes, the effects are even more alarming. It can cause intense pain, uncontrollable twitching of the eyelids, excessive tearing, and inflammation. Vision may become blurry, and sensitivity to light can persist long after exposure. Without prompt rinsing and medical care, permanent eye damage—including vision loss—is possible.

It’s important to note that most people won’t encounter strong acetic acid in daily life. It’s primarily used in industrial settings, laboratories, or in certain cleaning products. Still, anyone working with concentrated forms should wear protective gloves, goggles, and appropriate clothing.

If exposure does happen, immediate action is essential. Flush the affected area with plenty of water for at least 15–20 minutes and seek medical attention right away. Quick response can make a significant difference in reducing injury and preventing long-term harm.
