What to Do If You Accidentally Call 911 on Your iPhone

It’s easier than you think to dial 911 by mistake—especially with the way iPhones handle emergency calls. A pocket dial, a mispress, or even rapidly pressing the side button multiple times can trigger an automatic 911 call. When that happens, the most important thing is not to panic.

Many people, realizing their error, immediately hang up. But that can create more problems than it solves. When 911 receives a call that disconnects, dispatchers are trained to call back to make sure no one is in danger. If they can’t reach you, they may even send emergency responders to your location—just to be safe.

Instead, if you accidentally dial 911, stay on the line. Let the communications staff know it was a mistake. A simple “I’m sorry, this was an accident—I’m safe and don’t need help” is all it takes. That way, they can close the call without wasting time or resources.

It’s also worth knowing how your iPhone might trigger emergency calls. For example, pressing the side button and a volume button simultaneously five times quickly can initiate a call to 911. You can disable this feature in Settings > Emergency SOS if you're concerned about accidental dials.

Remember: dispatchers deal with hundreds of accidental calls every day. They’re not there to scold you—they’re there to help. The best thing you can do, even when you’re embarrassed, is to stay calm and talk to them. It saves time, prevents unnecessary worry, and keeps emergency lines open for real crises.
