What Happens When Water and Alcohol Mix?
When water and alcohol are combined, they blend together seamlessly to form a single, uniform liquid. Unlike oil and water, which instantly separate due to differing chemical properties, water and alcohol are completely miscible. This means they can be mixed in any proportion without ever separating back into distinct layers.
The secret behind this effortless blending lies at the molecular level. Both water and alcohol molecules share a similar structure that allows them to form strong hydrogen bonds. Because a water molecule interacts just as easily with an alcohol molecule as it does with another water molecule, they intermingle freely without any molecular repulsion.
Once combined, the separate liquids cease to exist independently, leaving behind one stable, homogeneous solution. Interestingly, because the different molecules fit together so efficiently in the spaces between one another, the resulting mixture actually occupies slightly less volume than the two liquids did apart.
