What Makes Household Objects Float?
Ever dropped a cork into a sink full of water and watched it bob to the surface? You're witnessing a basic but fascinating principle of physics—buoyancy. Whether it's a cork, a small chunk of wood, or even a piece of Styrofoam, certain common household items float for a simple reason: they're less dense than water.
Water has a density of about 1 gram per cubic centimeter. Materials with a lower density simply can't sink because they displace more water than they weigh.
