What Causes Autism? The Role of Genetics
For years, scientists have explored what leads to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and one thing is becoming increasingly clear: genetics play a major role. While the exact causes of autism are complex and still being studied, research consistently points to heredity as a key factor.
Studies of families and twins have been especially revealing. When scientists look at identical twins—who share nearly 100% of their DNA—if one twin has autism, the other is far more likely to have it too, compared to fraternal twins or siblings. These patterns suggest that genetic differences contribute significantly to the likelihood of developing autism.
About 90% of the variation in autism traits can be explained by genetic factors, according to multiple studies. This doesn't mean there's a single "autism gene," but rather that hundreds of genes may be involved, each contributing a small effect. These genes can influence brain development, communication between neurons, and early behavioral traits.That said, genetics aren’t the whole story. Environmental influences—such as prenatal conditions, parental age, or complications during pregnancy—may interact with genetic predispositions to shape how autism develops. But even these factors don’t act alone; they tend to matter more in individuals who are already genetically susceptible.
Understanding that autism is largely genetic helps reduce misconceptions. It’s not caused by parenting style, vaccines, or upbringing. Instead, it’s a neurodevelopmental difference woven into a person’s biology from early on.
As research continues, scientists hope to better understand how specific genes contribute to autism, which could lead to earlier support and more personalized approaches for individuals and families. But one thing is certain: autism is a natural variation in human neurodiversity, deeply rooted in our genes.
