What Is a Microbial Mat?
A microbial mat might sound like something out of a sci-fi novel, but it’s actually one of nature’s oldest and most resilient life forms. Think of it as a living carpet made up of countless microorganisms—mostly bacteria and archaea—stacked in thin, multi-layered sheets. These tiny communities cling tightly to surfaces where different environments meet, like the boundary between water and sediment, or even moist rock.
Most often found underwater or in damp places—like tidal flats, hot springs, or lake beds—microbial mats thrive where other life struggles. Each layer of the mat hosts different microbes, specialized to exploit the available light, oxygen, or chemicals. For example, photosynthetic cyanobacteria often form the top greenish layer, capturing sunlight, while deeper layers house microbes that survive on sulfur or methane, completely cut off from daylight.
Remarkably, these structures aren’t just ancient—they’re literally ancient. Some of the oldest evidence of life on Earth, dating back over 3 billion years, comes from fossilized microbial mats called stromatolites. These layered rock formations still exist today in places like Shark Bay in Australia, where living mats continue to build them layer by layer.While most microbial mats need moisture, some have adapted to extreme conditions—even surviving in arid deserts by clinging to life during rare rains. Their resilience and complexity make them more than just slimy patches; they’re miniature ecosystems that have shaped Earth’s atmosphere and paved the way for more complex life.
