When doctors suspect a problem with blood flow to the lungs, they may order what's commonly called a PA test. This stands for pulmonary angiography, a specialized imaging procedure used to examine the arteries in the lungs. Itβs not just a standard X-ray β it involves injecting a contrast dye into the bloodstream, which makes the pulmonary arteries visible on X-ray images.
During the test, a thin tube called a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel, usually in the groin or arm, and guided to the pulmonary arteries.
