What Is a PDA?

A patent ductus arteriosus, commonly known as a PDA, is a heart condition where a small blood vessel—normally present before birth—fails to close after a baby is born. This vessel, called the ductus arteriosus, plays a crucial role in fetal circulation, allowing blood to bypass the lungs while the baby is still in the womb. Since the fetus doesn’t use its lungs to breathe, this shortcut helps redirect oxygen-rich blood from the mother.

After birth, when a newborn takes its first breath, the lungs expand and the pressure in the heart changes. In most cases, the ductus arteriosus naturally closes within a few days. But in some infants—especially premature babies—the vessel remains open, or "patent," leading to a PDA.

When the ductus stays open, it allows oxygen-rich blood from the aorta to mix with oxygen-poor blood in the pulmonary artery. This extra volume of blood can overload the lungs and force the heart to work harder over time, potentially leading to heart failure or poor growth if untreated.

Symptoms can vary. Some children show no signs at all, while others may experience rapid breathing, poor feeding, or frequent respiratory infections. Doctors often detect a PDA through a telltale heart murmur during a routine exam.

Thankfully, treatment options are effective and well-established. Depending on the size of the opening and the baby’s overall health, doctors may recommend medication, catheter-based procedures, or, in rare cases, surgery. Most children who receive timely care go on to live healthy, normal lives.

While PDA is relatively rare in full-term infants, it’s one of the more common heart defects seen in preemies. Early detection and proper medical care make all the difference.
