What Are Priority Pollutants?

When we talk about protecting our rivers, lakes, and drinking water, one key concept is the idea of priority pollutants. These are specific chemical substances that environmental agencies, like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), have identified as particularly harmful to human health and the environment.

But what makes a pollutant “priority”? It’s not just about toxicity—though that’s a major factor. These chemicals are selected because they pose significant risks when released into waterways, and crucially, because we have reliable methods to detect and measure them. The Clean Water Act helped establish this list to guide monitoring and enforcement, ensuring industries and municipalities keep their discharges within safe limits.

Many of these don’t break down easily, meaning they can build up in ecosystems and food chains over time, increasing their danger.

While the original list was developed decades ago, it remains a cornerstone of water quality policy. Today, scientists continue to study emerging contaminants—like pharmaceuticals and microplastics—that may one day join the list as detection methods improve and our understanding of their impact grows.
