Understanding Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
When doctors assess heart and lung health, one key measure is pulmonary arterial pressure (PAH). A normal resting pressure in the pulmonary artery is typically between 8 and 20 mm Hg. However, when this pressure rises to 35 mm Hg or higher, it signals the presence of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
This condition isn’t graded lightly. Medical guidelines classify PAH in stages: mild (35–50 mm Hg), moderate (50–70 mm Hg), and severe PAH, which is defined as pressures exceeding 70 mm Hg. At this level, the heart’s right ventricle struggles to pump blood through the lungs, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and even right-sided heart failure if untreated.
Severe PAH isn’t just a number on a test—it reflects a significant strain on the cardiovascular system. It often develops gradually, making early detection critical. While imaging and clinical evaluation help, the definitive measurement usually comes from right heart catheterization, the gold standard for diagnosing and staging PAH.
Patients with severe pulmonary hypertension require prompt, specialized care. Treatment may include targeted medications, lifestyle adjustments, and in advanced cases, interventions like lung transplantation. The goal is not only to lower pressure but also to improve quality of life and slow disease progression.
