What Is Carbopol? A Closer Look at Its Identity

Carbopol, a name frequently encountered in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial formulations, is actually a brand name for a class of synthetic polymers. Another name for Carbopol is PAA, or polyacrylic acid, though it’s more precisely known in the industry as carbomer. This high molecular weight polymer is an anionic synthetic material, meaning it carries a negative charge when dissolved in water, giving it powerful thickening and stabilizing properties.

Carbopol®—a trademarked product—belongs to a family of cross-linked acrylic acid polymers. These cross-links are typically formed using allyl ethers of sucrose or pentaerythritol, which help create its unique gel-like structure when hydrated. This structure allows it to swell dramatically in water, forming clear, viscous gels that are ideal for controlling the texture and flow of liquids in products like lotions, creams, and even drug delivery systems.

Because of its versatility, carbomer (or carbopol) is prized for enhancing product stability, improving spreadability, and providing a smooth sensory feel. It’s also widely used in controlled-release pharmaceuticals due to its ability to modulate the release of active ingredients.

Despite being synthetic, carbopol is chemically inert and generally considered safe in topical applications, which explains its prevalence across consumer products.
