What Exactly Is a Biofilm?
Imagine brushing your teeth and feeling that slippery film on your gums—chances are, you've just encountered a biofilm. In simple terms, a biofilm is a slimy layer made up of bacteria and other microbes that stick to a surface. These tiny communities aren't just found in our mouths—they thrive almost anywhere moisture and nutrients are present.
Naturally, biofilms form on things like rocks in streams, the inside of pipes, and yes, even our teeth (hello, plaque!). Researchers are working on new ways to disrupt or prevent these microbial cities from forming, especially on devices used in surgeries. Simple hygiene helps, but science is racing to stay ahead of these resilient, invisible colonies.
