What Is Evaporation?

Evaporation is the process by which a liquid turns into a gas. It happens when molecules at the surface of a liquid gain enough energy—usually from heat—to break free and enter the air as vapor. You’ve seen it in action: a puddle disappearing on a sunny day, or a wet towel drying in the breeze. Though it’s similar to boiling, evaporation occurs at any temperature, not just at the boiling point, and only at the liquid’s surface.
