How Evaporation Turns Liquid Water into Gas

We see it happen all the time, often without giving it a second thought. When rain puddles slowly dry up after a storm, or when wet laundry hung outside loses its moisture on a warm day, water seems to vanish into thin air. However, the liquid isn't actually disappearing—it is undergoing a natural physical transformation known as evaporation.

At its core, evaporation happens when a liquid turns into a gas. Thermal energy from surrounding heat sources—like the sun or ambient air—gives the liquid molecules enough speed and energy to break free from the surface. Once released, those molecules disperse into the atmosphere as an invisible gas called water vapor.
