What is Fast Evaporation?

Have you ever noticed how a puddle on a scorching summer sidewalk disappears in minutes, while one on a chilly, shaded street lingers all day? That difference comes down to fast evaporation.

At a molecular level, water is made of tiny particles that are constantly moving and bumping into each other. Normally, only a few energetic molecules near the surface manage to break free into the air as vapor. However, when you add heat, you give those water molecules a major energy boost. They start vibrating and colliding much faster.

Because they are moving with so much more speed, a greater number of molecules possess the power to break the surface tension and escape into the atmosphere. This explains why a damp piece of paper placed over a steaming cup of hot water dries out way faster than one sitting near a glass of cold water. The thermal energy simply accelerates the whole process, turning liquid into gas at a much quicker rate.
