What’s Faster Than Evaporation? Boiling Is

When you watch a puddle slowly disappear on a sunny day, you're seeing evaporation at work—water turning to vapor without boiling. It’s a quiet, gradual process that happens only at the surface of a liquid and can take minutes, hours, or even days, depending on the conditions.

But boiling? That’s a whole different story. Boiling is much faster than evaporation because it happens throughout the entire liquid, not just at the surface. When water reaches its boiling point—100°C (212°F) at sea level—bubbles form inside the liquid, rapidly pushing vapor into the air. This full-scale transformation means boiling moves water from liquid to gas far more quickly.

So why the difference? Evaporation occurs at any temperature, given enough time and low humidity, but it’s limited to surface molecules that have enough energy to escape. Boiling, on the other hand, is a rapid, energy-driven phase change that requires heat but delivers results in seconds, not hours.
