What Happens When Seawater Evaporates

When the sun warms the ocean, liquid water turns into vapor and rises into the air, but it leaves something very important behind. Because water can only carry away its pure liquid form, all the dissolved minerals and solid particles are forced to stay put on the surface or seabed.

If you were to take a small sample—say, 100 grams of seawater—and boil it completely dry, you would discover about 3.5 grams of solid residue waiting at the bottom of your pan. This leftover material isn't just one single substance; it is a rich mixture of various dissolved minerals.

The star of the show is sodium chloride, which makes up the vast majority of this salty leftover. This is the exact same compound you shake onto your food every day as table salt. Alongside sodium chloride, the residue also contains smaller amounts of other mineral salts, including compounds packed with calcium and magnesium, which give natural ocean water its distinct, slightly bitter taste compared to purified kitchen salt.
