What Are Stromatolites?
Stromatolites are among the most ancient traces of life on Earth—layered rock structures formed by communities of microscopic life. The word itself comes from the Greek stroma, meaning "layer," and lithos, meaning "stone," perfectly capturing their banded, rock-like appearance.
These formations are built over time by cyanobacteria, tiny microbes that thrive in shallow water environments. Through photosynthesis, these bacteria capture carbon dioxide and help precipitate carbonate minerals, gradually forming layers that stack up like pancakes. As new layers form, older ones become fossilized, preserving a record of life stretching back billions of years.
What makes stromatolites truly remarkable is their age. Some of the oldest known examples are over 3.5 billion years old, found in Western Australia. They offer a rare glimpse into the early days of life on our planet, long before complex organisms existed. In fact, the oxygen produced by ancient cyanobacteria in these structures helped shape Earth’s atmosphere into one that could support more advanced life forms.
While most stromatolites today are fossilized, living examples still exist in a few isolated locations—such as Shark Bay in Australia and certain parts of the Bahamas. These modern colonies grow incredibly slowly, sometimes just a millimeter per year, reminding us of the quiet persistence of microbial life.
More than just geological oddities, stromatolites are silent witnesses to the origins of life. They represent one of the earliest partnerships between biology and geology, where tiny organisms left an outsized mark on the planet. In studying them, we’re not just looking at rocks—we’re reading the first chapters of life’s long story on Earth.
