Understanding Normal Pulmonary Artery Pressure

When doctors assess heart and lung health, one important measurement is the pressure within the pulmonary arteries—the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. Normal pulmonary artery systolic pressure is typically 20 mm Hg or less, while the mean (average) pressure usually sits around 12 mm Hg. These values indicate healthy blood flow through the lungs, where oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is released.

When pressures rise above this normal range, it may signal a condition called pulmonary hypertension. This increase puts strain on the right side of the heart, particularly the right ventricle, which must work harder to pump blood against the elevated pressure. Over time, this strain can lead to right heart failure if left untreated.

A variety of conditions can disrupt the delicate balance of the pulmonary circulation. Chronic lung diseases like COPD, left-sided heart failure, blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or autoimmune disorders such as scleroderma can all contribute to increased pulmonary artery pressure. In some cases, the cause remains unknown—a condition referred to as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Diagnosing elevated pressures often involves echocardiography, a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart, which estimates pulmonary pressures based on blood flow patterns. For a definitive measurement, doctors may perform a right heart catheterization, which directly assesses pressure within the pulmonary arteries.

Maintaining normal pulmonary artery pressure is crucial for overall cardiovascular health. Early detection and management of underlying conditions can prevent complications and improve quality of life.
