Shaq Opens Up About His Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

Shaquille O’Neal, one of the most dominant forces in NBA history, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with sleep apnea—a condition that affects millions but often goes undetected. The Hall of Famer, known for his larger-than-life presence both on and off the court, credits his partner for potentially saving his life by noticing troubling signs while he slept.

“She started noticing that I would stop breathing at night,” Shaq shared, shedding light on a common yet serious symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. The condition occurs when the throat muscles relax during sleep, blocking the airway and causing breathing to pause repeatedly. For someone of Shaq’s stature, the risk factors—like weight and neck size—can increase susceptibility.

“I didn’t realize how dangerous it was until she pushed me to get checked,” he admitted. After undergoing a sleep study, the diagnosis was confirmed. Since then, Shaq has been using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine at night to keep his airways open and ensure restful, safe sleep.

Sleep apnea isn’t just about snoring or fatigue—it’s linked to high blood pressure, heart issues, and stroke. Shaq’s openness about his experience has helped raise awareness, especially among men who might otherwise ignore the warning signs. “I feel way better now,” he said. “More energy, sharper mind—things I thought were just part of getting older.”

His story is a powerful reminder: sometimes, the people who care about us notice things we can’t. And in Shaq’s case, that attention may have made all the difference. If you or a loved one shows signs of disrupted breathing at night, it might be worth a conversation with a doctor. As the big fella would say—don’t sleep on it.
