Understanding Peripheral Artery Disease and Age

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that affects blood flow to the limbs, most commonly the legs. It occurs when arteries narrow due to plaque buildup, reducing circulation and often causing pain during physical activity. One of the key diagnostic tools for PAD is the ankle-brachial index (ABI), a simple test comparing blood pressure in the ankle to that in the arm. A result below 0.9 typically confirms the presence of the disease.

While PAD can occur at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in individuals over 50. The risk increases significantly with age, especially for those with other contributing factors like smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of cardiovascular disease. As the body ages, arteries naturally become less flexible and more prone to blockages, making older adults more vulnerable.

That said, while rare, PAD can affect younger people—particularly those with strong risk factors or genetic predispositions. This is why healthcare providers should not overlook symptoms such as leg pain while walking (claudication), numbness, or slow-healing sores just because a patient is under 50. Exertional lower extremity symptoms should always prompt further investigation, regardless of age.

Early detection is crucial. Screening with the ABI test, especially in at-risk populations, can lead to timely interventions like lifestyle changes, medication, or procedures to restore blood flow. Managing PAD isn’t just about relieving leg pain—it’s about reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and severe complications like amputation.

In short, while PAD is most prevalent after age 50, awareness and vigilance matter at any stage of life. Listening to the body and seeking medical advice for persistent symptoms can make a significant difference in long-term health outcomes.
