Laboratory Equipment for Evaporation Experiments
When conducting experiments that involve heating or evaporating liquids, scientists rely on specialized containers designed to withstand extreme temperatures. The most common vessel used for this purpose is the evaporating dish.
These shallow, heat-tolerant containers come in a couple of standard material types depending on the intensity of the heat and the nature of the substance being tested. They are typically crafted from porcelain—frequently referred to in a lab setting as a china dish—or heavy-duty borosilicate glass, such as Pyrex.
The wide, open shape of the evaporating dish is intentionally designed to maximize surface area. This allows liquids to heat evenly and evaporate into the air much faster. Because they can handle direct exposure to a Bunsen burner flame or a hot plate without cracking, they are essential tools for separating dissolved solids from liquids or concentrating solutions safely.
