What Exactly Is a Biofilm?
Imagine a bustling microbial city clinging to a surface—this is essentially what a biofilm is. Formally known as a biofilm (pronounced BY-oh-FILM), it’s a slimy, tightly-knit layer of bacteria or other microorganisms that attach themselves to both natural and artificial surfaces.
You’ve probably encountered one without even realizing it. The fuzzy feeling on your teeth in the morning? That’s a biofilm—commonly called dental plaque. In nature, biofilms form on rocks in streams, on plant roots, and even inside the human body. But they’re not just limited to natural environments.
In medical settings, biofilms can pose serious challenges. They frequently develop on devices like urinary catheters, pacemakers, or artificial joints. Once established, these microbial communities are notoriously difficult to eradicate. The structure of a biofilm acts like a protective shield, making the bacteria inside highly resistant to antibiotics and the body’s immune defenses.
This resilience is one reason infections linked to biofilms can be so persistent. Researchers are actively exploring new ways to prevent or break down biofilms, especially in healthcare, where they contribute to chronic infections and complications.
So while biofilms might seem like a minor nuisance on your teeth, their ability to thrive in diverse environments—from rivers to hospital equipment—makes them a significant focus in both medicine and biology.
