Understanding Evaporation

At its core, evaporation is the process where liquid turns into gas, taking place right at the surface of the liquid. While the concept itself simply describes this phase change, the rate of evaporation measures how fast or slow this transformation actually happens.

Several everyday factors dictate this speed. First is surface area: a wider container exposes more liquid to the air, allowing more molecules to escape simultaneously and speeding up the process. Conversely, a smaller surface area restricts molecules, slowing the rate right down.

Humidity plays a massive role as well. When the surrounding air is already heavy with moisture—meaning it has a high concentration of water vapor—it leaves very little room for new water molecules to join the air. This crowded atmosphere creates resistance, making it much harder for liquid molecules to break free and drastically lowering the rate of evaporation.
