Understanding the Difference Between Evaporation and Vaporization
While both vaporization and evaporation describe how a liquid turns into a gas, they happen in distinct ways. The main difference lies in where and how the phase change occurs within the liquid.
Evaporation is a surface phenomenon. It happens slowly at temperatures below the boiling point, when molecules at the very top layer of the liquid gain enough energy from their surroundings to escape into the air. Think of a puddle slowly drying up on a warm day—only the surface water is disappearing.
Vaporization is a broader term that encompasses any process where a liquid turns into a gas, including boiling. Unlike evaporation, vaporization can involve the entire body of liquid. When a liquid reaches its boiling point, molecules throughout the liquid—not just at the surface—gain enough energy to form vapor bubbles deep inside, rise, and escape into the atmosphere.
In short, evaporation is quiet and restricted strictly to the surface, whereas vaporization can happen rapidly and throughout the entire volume of the liquid once heat is applied.
