What’s the Difference Between Microbial Mats and Stromatolites?

It’s easy to confuse microbial mats and stromatolites—they’re closely linked, but not the same thing. Think of microbial mats as living, layered communities of microorganisms, mostly bacteria and archaea, thriving in shallow water environments. These thin, sticky films can trap sediment and influence chemical processes, laying the groundwork for something more permanent.

Stromatolites, on the other hand, are the fossilized results of microbial mat activity over time. As the microbial mat grows, it captures sand and mineral particles from the surrounding water. In some cases, minerals even precipitate directly from the water due to chemical changes caused by the microbes. Over time, these trapped and precipitated materials build up in layers, forming a rock-like structure. When preserved in the geological record, these layered formations become stromatolite fossils.
