Understanding the Difference Between Vinegar and White Vinegar

When you are walking down the grocery aisle, it is easy to assume all clear vinegars are the same. However, there is a distinct difference between standard distilled white vinegar and cleaning vinegar that you need to know before using them.

The main difference comes down to potency. Regular distilled white vinegar typically contains 5% acetic acid, making it safe for cooking, pickling, and everyday household tasks. On the other hand, cleaning vinegar usually contains 6 to 8% acetic acid.

That extra percentage might not sound like much, but it gives cleaning vinegar significantly more strength against tough dirt, soap scum, and grease. Because of this higher acidity, cleaning vinegar is strictly meant for household chores and should never be consumed or used in recipes.

Always check your bottle labels before use. Reaching for regular white vinegar is best for your culinary needs, while saving cleaning vinegar strictly for scrubbing surfaces around the house.
