Duck Viral Hepatitis: A Serious Threat to Pekin Ducks

Duck viral hepatitis (DVH) is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that primarily affects young Pekin ducks. Caused by a picornavirus, DVH spreads rapidly through contaminated environments, equipment, or direct contact with infected birds. The disease is particularly dangerous in ducklings under three weeks of age, where mortality rates can soar to 90% if left unchecked.

Symptoms typically appear suddenly and include lethargy, loss of coordination, and seizures before death occurs within hours of the first signs. The virus targets the liver, leading to rapid organ failure, which is why the disease progresses so quickly. Post-mortem examination often reveals swollen, mottled livers with hemorrhagic spots—a key diagnostic feature.

Prevention is crucial, as there is no effective treatment once ducks are infected. Vaccination of breeder ducks is a common strategy to pass protective maternal antibodies to ducklings, offering them early immunity. Maintaining strict biosecurity on farms—such as disinfecting housing, limiting visitor access, and isolating new birds—can significantly reduce the risk of outbreaks.

Given the economic importance of Pekin ducks in poultry farming, especially for meat production, controlling DVH is not just a health concern but a financial necessity. Farmers in endemic regions must remain vigilant, working closely with veterinarians to implement vaccination programs and rapid response protocols.

While advances in vaccine development and farm management have helped reduce the impact of DVH, it remains a persistent challenge. Awareness, early detection, and proactive prevention are the best defenses against this devastating disease.
