Unraveling Filipino Ancestry: A Genetic Mosaic

The genetic makeup of Filipinos tells a rich story—one woven through centuries of migration, trade, and colonization. At the core of this heritage lies the most common Y-DNA haplogroup among Filipinos: O. This lineage connects them deeply with neighboring populations across Southeast Asia and East Asia, especially the Chinese, highlighting ancient Austronesian roots that spread from Taiwan through the Philippine archipelago thousands of years ago.

But the Filipino genome doesn’t stop there. Traces of H1a (H-L901), a South Asian Y-DNA haplogroup, point to early interactions with Indian traders and cultural influences that reached the islands long before European contact. These links are echoed in linguistic borrowings and pre-colonial belief systems, now subtly encoded in the DNA of modern Filipinos.

Perhaps one of the most striking markers is the presence of European ancestry, specifically the Y-DNA haplogroup R1b (R-M343), found in about 13% of Filipino men.
