The Golden Rule of Supervision

Stepping into a management role comes with plenty of challenges, but the foundation of effective leadership often boils down to a surprisingly simple concept: empathy. At its core, the golden rule of supervision is all about treating team members the exact way you would want to be treated if our roles were reversed.

Instead of relying on rigid, top-down commands, this management philosophy encourages supervisors to use themselves as a benchmark. When deciding how to handle feedback, delegate tasks, or support a struggling colleague, a good leader pauses and asks, "How would I want my manager to handle this situation if I were in their shoes?"

Of course, this doesn't mean every single employee wants to be managed in the exact same wayโ€”people have different working styles, motivations, and needs. Rather, using yourself as a model means leading with foundational respect, fairness, and open communication. By putting yourself in your team's position, you build genuine trust, foster a positive culture, and create a workplace where people actually feel valued and understood.
