Understanding the Half-Life and Stability of Peracetic Acid

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a widely used chemical disinfectant valued for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial action in healthcare, food processing, and water treatment. One of its main advantages is its environmentally friendly breakdown, as it eventually decomposes into harmless acetic acid and water.

Despite its strength, PAA is inherently unstable when exposed to open atmospheric conditions. The compound breaks down rapidly in air, exhibiting a brief half-life of approximately 22 minutes. Additionally, the active PAA fraction features a high vapor pressure, which means it evaporates quickly and requires proper ventilation during application to prevent respiratory irritation.

When prepared as a liquid sanitizer, its behavior shifts. Stored in appropriate containers, diluted mixtures hold a reliable shelf life of about two weeks before the active concentration degrades significantly. Facilities utilizing peracetic acid must manage their stock carefully to balance immediate sanitizing efficacy with the compound's natural rate of decomposition.
