Where Does Most Evaporation Come From?
The vast majority of water vapor entering the atmosphere starts its journey as evaporation from Earth's surface waters. While lakes, rivers, and even moist soil contribute, the dominant source by far is the ocean. In fact, oceans are responsible for roughly 90% of the moisture found in the atmosphere.
It makes sense when you consider the scale. Over 70% of our planet is covered by saltwater oceans—vast, continuous expanses that absorb immense amounts of solar energy. This constant heating fuels continuous evaporation, sending huge volumes of water vapor skyward. That vapor then plays a crucial role in forming clouds and driving weather patterns across continents.
While smaller bodies of water also evaporate, their surface area is simply no match for the sheer size of the oceans. Even large lakes contribute only a fraction in comparison. The ocean’s role in the global water cycle isn’t just significant—it’s fundamental.
Without this massive, ongoing evaporation, rainfall would be far less frequent, ecosystems would struggle, and the planet's climate systems would look entirely different.
