What Causes Scoliosis? The Answer Isn’t Always Clear
For many people, especially parents noticing a child’s uneven shoulders or leaning posture, scoliosis can be a source of concern. Yet when doctors are asked what causes it, the answer often isn’t straightforward. In the most common form—called idiopathic scoliosis—the exact cause remains unknown. Despite extensive research, experts haven’t pinpointed a single trigger, though there’s strong evidence it can run in families. If a parent or sibling has scoliosis, the likelihood of developing it increases, suggesting genetics play a significant role.
While idiopathic scoliosis has no clear origin, other types are linked to specific underlying issues. Neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spinal cord injuries, can lead to spinal curvature by affecting the muscles and nerves that support the spine. When these systems don’t function properly, the spine may develop an abnormal sideways bend over time. Scoliosis can also result from birth defects affecting spinal development or, more rarely, from injuries or infections.
It’s important to note that poor posture or carrying heavy backpacks, often blamed in popular belief, are not proven causes of scoliosis. The condition typically emerges during growth spurts in adolescence, which is why early screening is key. Most cases are mild and may not require treatment, but regular monitoring by a healthcare provider ensures any progression is caught early.
While science continues to explore the root causes, one thing is certain: scoliosis is more than just a curve in the spine—it’s a complex condition shaped by genetics, development, and sometimes, conditions affecting the body’s movement systems. Understanding this helps demystify the diagnosis and guides effective care.
