What Makes Up a Hydrogel?
When you think of hydrogels, you might picture the soft, squishy material in contact lenses or wound dressings. But what exactly are they made of? At the heart of every hydrogel is water—often making up more than 90%—held together by a network of polymeric materials. These polymers are the real stars, giving hydrogels their unique structure and flexibility.
The main ingredients in hydrogels fall into two broad categories: natural and synthetic polymers. Natural polymers come from biological sources and are prized for their biocompatibility and biodegradability. Common examples include hyaluronic acid—famous for its role in skin hydration—chitosan, derived from shellfish; alginate, extracted from seaweed; and gelatin, which comes from animal collagen. Others like heparin and fibrin play roles in medical applications due to their interaction with the body’s natural processes.
These natural materials are often chosen when the hydrogel is intended for use in the human body, such as in drug delivery systems or tissue engineering. Their ability to integrate safely with biological tissues makes them ideal for sensitive applications.
While synthetic polymers offer more control over mechanical properties and longevity, natural polymers bring a kind of “bio-friendliness” that’s hard to match. The choice between them depends on the intended use—but in many cases, researchers blend both to get the best of both worlds.
