What Does "Square" Mean in Math?
When you hear the word square in math, it’s not about shape—though that’s part of it too. Here, it refers to an operation: multiplying a number by itself. For example, the square of 3 is 3 times 3, which equals 9. This is usually written as 32, with the little 2 above the number indicating the exponent.
