Be Wary of Sweet Words

One of Aesop’s most enduring fables, The Crow and the Fox, tells a simple yet powerful story. A crow, perched high in a tree, proudly holds a piece of cheese in her beak. Along comes a fox, who, charmed by the prize, devises a cunning plan. With smooth words and exaggerated compliments, the fox praises the crow’s beauty and, most cunningly, suggests that such a magnificent creature must surely have a voice to match. Flattered, the crow opens her beak to sing—and drops the cheese, which the fox promptly snatches and devours.

The moral? Be careful who you trust. The crow didn’t question the fox’s sudden admiration. She let flattery cloud her judgment, and paid the price. In today’s world, this lesson holds just as true. Whether in friendships, business, or online interactions, smooth talk and excessive praise can sometimes mask hidden intentions.

Flattery feels good—there’s no denying it. But when it comes from someone with something to gain, it’s worth pausing. Ask yourself: Why is this person being so generous with compliments? What do they stand to win? The fable doesn’t condemn kindness; it warns against blind acceptance of praise, especially when it feels too perfectly timed, too carefully tailored.

In a world full of loud voices and polished words, the crow’s mistake reminds us to stay grounded. Confidence is valuable, but so is caution. Not every compliment is genuine, and not every friendly face has honest intentions. Sometimes, keeping your cheese—and your silence—is the wisest move of all.
