The Microbial World Within Biofilms
Hidden in plain sight, biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms that cling to surfaces, forming slimy, protective layers. These biological films are more than just a nuisance—they’re bustling microbial cities where bacteria thrive together, shielded from antibiotics and the immune system.
Among the most common residents of these biofilms are several well-known bacterial species. Pseudomonas aeruginosa frequently appears in hospital environments, notorious for its resilience and ability to infect compromised tissues. Equally common is Staphylococcus epidermidis, a skin microbe that’s usually harmless but can turn dangerous on medical implants like catheters or prosthetic devices.
In urinary tracts and gastrointestinal settings, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae often form biofilms, contributing to recurring infections. Proteus mirabilis is another frequent culprit in catheter-associated infections, known for forming crystalline structures that damage tissues. Meanwhile, Streptococcus viridans plays a role in oral plaque and dental biofilms, while Staphylococcus aureus—including its drug-resistant form, MRSA—can persist in wounds and implants.
Other common inhabitants include Enterococcus faecalis, a tough bacterium that survives harsh conditions and often resists treatment in hospital settings. These species don’t act alone; their combined presence in a biofilm makes them far more difficult to eradicate than individual planktonic bacteria.
Biofilms are everywhere—in medical devices, water pipes, and even on teeth as plaque. Understanding which bacteria dominate these communities helps scientists develop better treatments and preventive strategies. While they may be tiny, the organisms in biofilms have an outsized impact on health and hygiene.
