Understanding the Causes of Diarrhea

Dealing with an upset stomach is never fun, and diarrhea is one of the most common ways our bodies react to internal irritation. When it hits suddenly, it is usually referred to as acute diarrhea, and it can stem from a few everyday culprits.

By far, the most frequent reason is viral gastroenteritis—often called the stomach bug—which spreads easily and affects your digestive tract. Another major cause is food poisoning, happening when you eat something contaminated with harmful bacteria or toxins. Additionally, traveling to new places can expose your gut to unfamiliar microorganisms, leading to travelers' diarrhea.

Beyond infections, everyday things can also trigger these symptoms. Medicine side effects are a frequent offender, especially when starting a new prescription like antibiotics, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in your gut. Other potential triggers include food allergies and intolerances, underlying digestive tract issues, and disorders affecting gut-brain interaction.

Most cases clear up on their own within a few days with plenty of rest and hydration. However, if symptoms persist or feel severe, it is always best to check in with a healthcare professional.
