The Most Common Type of PDA: Conical (Type A)
When it comes to patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart condition where the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth, one type stands out as the most frequently seen: the conical or Type A PDA.
This variety earns its name from its distinctive funnel-like shape. It’s wide at the pulmonary artery end and gradually tapers as it connects to the aorta—resembling a cone. Because of this structure, blood flow through the vessel can be more substantial, often leading to noticeable symptoms, especially in infants.
Interestingly, the conical PDA is not only the most common anatomical form but also the one most likely to be detected early. Doctors typically identify it through a characteristic heart murmur—sometimes described as a "machinery murmur"—heard during a routine physical exam. Modern imaging techniques like echocardiography make it easier to confirm the diagnosis and assess the size and shape of the PDA.
While PDAs can vary in size and impact, the conical type responds well to treatment. In many cases, medications such as ibuprofen or indomethacin can help close the ductus in premature infants. If those aren’t effective, minimally invasive catheter procedures or surgery offer reliable solutions.
