Detecting Inflammation: Understanding CRP and ESR

When doctors investigate undiagnosed medical conditions to check for hidden inflammation, they often turn to blood tests. Historically, two primary markers have been used, but modern medicine heavily favors one over the other for accuracy.

The most reliable test for acute inflammation is the C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test. Produced by the liver in response to inflammatory signals, CRP levels rise rapidly when the body is dealing with an acute injury, infection, or flare-up.

Medical guidelines recommend CRP over the older Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) test because CRP is significantly more sensitive and specific. While ESR measures how quickly red blood cells settle to the bottom of a test tube—a process that can be easily influenced by age, anemia, or pregnancy—CRP provides a direct, precise measurement of active inflammation proteins in the bloodstream.

By relying on the CRP test, healthcare providers can get a much clearer, faster picture of what is happening inside the body, leading to quicker and more accurate diagnoses.
