The One Exercise That Might Slow Down Aging
If there’s a single move that could help you stay youthful, flexible, and moving freely as you age, it might just be the malasana squat—complete with a forward fold and overhead stretch. According to mobility and stretching coach @stretchy.bendy, this full-body movement is a quiet powerhouse for preserving the agility we often lose over time.
“It helps keep your hips mobile, helps you touch your toes, and maintain an upright posture—all the things that we lose with age,” she shared in a popular Instagram post. And she’s not wrong. The malasana squat, rooted in yoga, works deep into the hips, ankles, and lower back while encouraging spinal flexibility and shoulder openness when combined with the forward fold and reach.
As we get older, our bodies naturally start to stiffen—hips tighten, hamstrings shorten, and posture begins to slouch. This exercise counteracts all of that. By holding the deep squat and folding forward with arms extended overhead, you’re not just stretching; you’re retraining your body to stay grounded, balanced, and supple.
It’s low-impact, requires no equipment, and can be done anywhere. Aim to hold the pose for 30 seconds to a minute daily, using support under your heels if needed. Over time, many notice improved balance, reduced lower back tension, and greater ease in everyday movements—like bending, reaching, or getting up from the floor.
While no single exercise can stop time, the malasana squat with a forward fold and overhead reach comes close to being a functional fountain of youth. It’s a reminder that staying young isn’t about how fast you move—it’s about how well you can move through life.
