The Quickest Surgeries You Might Not Expect
When we think of surgery, images of long hours in the operating room often come to mind. But not all procedures are marathon events—some are surprisingly quick, both in execution and recovery. Two of the fastest common surgeries are vasectomies and appendectomies.
A vasectomy, a procedure for male sterilization, typically takes just 20 to 30 minutes. It’s often performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting, meaning no hospital stay. The procedure involves cutting or sealing the tubes that carry sperm, effectively preventing pregnancy. Thanks to modern techniques, discomfort is minimal, and most men return to light activities within a day or two.
On the slightly longer—but still fast—end is the appendectomy. When the appendix becomes inflamed or bursts, time is critical. Fortunately, removing the appendix usually takes about an hour, especially when done laparoscopically. This minimally invasive approach means smaller incisions, less pain, and quicker recovery times compared to open surgery.
Both procedures highlight how advances in medical technology have made certain surgeries not only faster but also safer. While a vasectomy is elective and planned, an appendectomy is often urgent—but in both cases, patients are often back on their feet much faster than they expect.
Still, "quickest" doesn’t mean risk-free. Even short operations require proper preparation and post-op care. But for those facing one of these common procedures, there’s comfort in knowing it could be over before lunchtime—with recovery not far behind.
